SKYLIFT GUIDE
Elevator Doors: Centre-Opening or Telescopic?
The elevator door affects access, the entrance appearance and site preparation. Discuss the clear opening, direction of entry, space in front of the door and user needs with the team. Suitability depends on the building and elevator system.
What is the difference between cabin and landing doors?
The cabin door travels with the elevator; a landing door is fixed at each stop. Both work together according to the system design. Check the description, finish and number of doors in the quotation.
Centre-opening doors
Centre-opening panels move away from the middle of the entrance. Ask a specialist to review the door dimensions, clear opening and space needed in the shaft and at each floor.
Telescopic doors
Telescopic panels slide toward one side and overlap when opened. They may help at some sites with limited space, but dimensions, opening direction and installation requirements vary. Request a drawing showing the clear opening and preparations.
How do you choose for your building?
- Use and access: Tell the team if wheelchair or stroller access is needed and discuss the opening and manoeuvring space at each floor.
- Site and stops: Check entrance direction, obstructions, shaft dimensions and differences between floors.
- Safety: Ask about protection against closing obstructions and the inspection and maintenance requirements.
- Finish: Compare material, colour and texture samples and specify cabin and landing door finishes in the offer.
- Scope: Request details of doors, stops, installation, civil and electrical work, warranty and exclusions.
Are telescopic doors always best for small spaces?
Not necessarily. The choice depends on the required opening, system components, space and access needs. A technical specialist should review the site, drawings and product specifications.
Can existing elevator doors be replaced?
Modernisation can be assessed after examining the elevator, doors, clearances, controls and applicable requirements. Request a written scope covering alterations, tests and cost. Do not modify doors or safety devices yourself.
What should you ask before approving a quote?
What cabin and landing doors are proposed? What are the clear opening width and direction, finishes and safety devices? Are all stops, work and tests included? What are the maintenance and warranty terms? Share drawings and access needs with the team.
