Elevators During a Power Outage: Automatic Rescue Explained
Before buying an elevator, ask what happens if power fails while passengers are inside. The answer depends on the installed equipment, emergency system and its condition. Ask the supplier to explain the rescue function and inspection requirements; not every elevator has the same equipment.
What is an automatic rescue device?
An automatic rescue device, or ARD, is emergency equipment that uses backup power in some systems. After a power failure it may move the car to a suitable nearby landing and open the doors, subject to the device design and safety-circuit conditions. Operation depends on compatibility and the nature of the fault.
Will the elevator keep operating during an outage?
Not necessarily. Some rescue devices evacuate passengers at a suitable landing and then take the elevator out of service until power returns or a specialist intervenes. Continued or reduced operation requires a compatible backup power and control arrangement for the building and elevator. Ask for the actual functions in the quotation.
Does every elevator use the same battery?
Requirements vary by manufacturer, elevator type, capacity and rescue system. Ask a qualified specialist to identify compatible equipment and batteries, inspection and replacement arrangements, and expected life under manufacturer instructions. Do not rely on a generic size or duration.
What if the elevator stops while I am inside?
- Stay calm and use the alarm or available communication system to request help.
- Contact building management or the maintenance provider and explain the elevator location, passenger count and urgent needs.
- Do not force the doors or attempt to climb out of a stopped car. Wait for qualified assistance.
- For a medical emergency or immediate danger, contact the appropriate local emergency services.
How can I check that the rescue device is ready?
Ask a qualified maintenance provider to inspect the rescue equipment, battery and communication system as scheduled, following manufacturer instructions and applicable requirements. Keep inspection records and clarify responsibility for faults and replacement parts.
Questions to ask before signing
- Is a rescue device included, and which manufacturer and compatible model are proposed?
- Where will passengers be taken during a power outage, and what happens after the doors open?
- Is an alarm or communication system provided, and what does it need to work during an outage?
- Does the maintenance agreement include device and battery inspections or replacement, and what is excluded?
- Does the building need additional backup operation, equipment or approvals?
Share the elevator specifications with the team and request a written explanation of suitable options after a site review.
